Identification of new pathogens, which nearly always begin as zoonotic infections that spill over from animals, is a critical and rate-limiting step in the study of disease. Historically, discovery of new pathogens was itself limited by the slow advance of techniques for the culture of organisms, most of which remain unculturable. New bioinformatic tools, developed at Penn State, allowed to identify and study organisms associated with disease. This report focuses on identification and characterization of the diversity of zoonotic organisms, endemic to livestock, in Pakistan.
