We sought to characterize temporal changes inthe cutaneous microbiome of U.S. Air Force military trainees in the setting of communalliving and universal antibiotic prophylaxis. Six male and four female trainee groups encompassing 500 estimated subjects had cutaneous swabs taken from their forearms and forehead during Week 0. This was followed by administration of 1.2 million units intramuscular penicillin. Additional swabs were collected atWeek 4 and Week 7. Swabs were pooled by group and time point and analyzed for 16S ribosomal RNA bacterial composition via Ion PGM Sequencing and QIIME bioinformatics.
