Innervated Blood-Brain-Barrier Tissue for the Study of Neuroinvasion by VEEV

With the goal of understanding how Venezuelan equine encephalitis virus VEEV infection permeates the blood-brain barrier BBB, this collaborative project seeks to develop a BBB tissue model that can eliminate many of the shortcomings of current methods to map viral transport and host response in real time by use of an innovative 3D tissue model based on flexible nanoscale field-effect transistor FET technology developed in our laboratory. We supported the projects goal of elucidating VEEV pathogenesis by developing, testing and providing to NRL, with appropriate training, nanoFET mesh arrays and measurement systems to develop the BBB model. We also developed sensing strategies based on chemical functionalization of mesh arrays for specific antigen detection in physiological solutions using VEEV analogues.
