Progress supported by this proposal ranged from basic mathematical advances to applications of these advances to issues in ecology and management of ecological systems. One of the most basic approaches for understanding transient dynamics is based on non-autonomous differential equations, which were used to look at the transit time and residency time of particles in compartmental systems, with potential application to understanding the dynamics of carbon pools.
