Abstract:

Personnel in armies worldwide have been aware for centuries that the atmosphere may affect the trajectories of all types of projectiles from arrows to artillery. At longer ranges, meteorological error may contribute up to two-thirds of the entire trajectory error budget. This short report briefly summarizes developments in land-based artillery meteorology over approximately the last 100 years in the United States, with a limited reference to related developments in the United Kingdom.
