Fueling the Future: Furthering Theater Security with Burma's Energy Industry
Joint Military Operations Newport United States
Pagination or Media Count:
Burma suffers from a significant development gap and woefully inadequate energy infrastructure, and is actively seeking foreign economic assistance and industrial development expertise. Chinas extractive approach to foreign investment in Burma has inflicted more harm than good on the Burmese population. With Burmas recent shift towards democratic ideals, the U.S. should provide investment and technical assistance in Burmas energy industry to foster financial partnership and energy access in Asia while assisting Burma to strengthen its economy and improve its governance. It is in U.S. interests to support a stronger Burma, which in turn will help bring stability and security to the Asia-Pacific region while countering Chinas influence and strategic interests.
