Abstract:
Formal occupational exposure limits OELs for polyalphaolefin PAO fluids have not been proposed. Specific PAO fluids are used as aircraft hydraulic fluid components or heat sink coolants for aircraft service air and electronics. Studies compared toxicity of a PAO fluid in male and female Fischer 344 rats by acute inhalation 0, 100, 500 and 1000 mgm3 aerosol for 6 hours and two-week inhalation 0, 20, 100 and 300 mgm3 aerosol for 6 hoursday, five daysweek for two weeks. Neurobehavioral tests following the acute exposure showed that both sexes were passive after exposure to 1000 mgm3 PAO, and to a lesser extent after 500 mgm3 PAO. Body weight, food and water consumption were also affected, with recovery after 24 hours.
