At the request of US Army Natick Soldier Research, Development and Engineering Center NSRDEC Chemical Sciences and Engineering Team, the US Army Research Institute of Environmental Medicine USARIEM Biophysics and Biomedical Modeling Division has analyzed the effect of swatch thermal properties on ensemble thermal properties and predicted human thermoregulatory responses. This report is a summary of those findings. The report reviews factors affecting human body thermal balance, including fabric and clothing biophysics analyzes the relationships among fabric thermal properties, ensemble thermal properties and endurance times and proposes a pathway forward to reduce heat strain in PPE.
