Abstract:
Current US basing structure places American forces on every continent of the world. Proponents credit these missions with successful regional security, maintenance of enduring alliances, and an active role in securing US security interests. This sustained global presence, however, places US forces at deep risk and fails to meet US strategy. America jeopardizes more by extending its limited forces in piece-meal permanent global basing, risking destruction from powerful regional actors in major combat operations, and facilitating alliances dependent on US military presence.
