Abstract:

The galvanic interaction of coated AA7075-T6 panels with stainless steel fasteners during immersion in NaCl solution and in a salt spray chamber was studied. Galvanic current and optical profilometry were used to determine the extent and morphology of attack. Coatings were compromised at the fastener hole due to mechanical damage from the fastener and inadequate coating coverage. EIS was used to determine the extent of coating protection at the fastener hole and compare various fastener hole configurations with the protection away from the fastener hole. Impressed current was used to control of the amount of charge passed, as well as the rate at which it is passed.
