Lessons learned from years of research-team leadership experience are enumerated and partitioned into best programmatic and people-skill practices. From a productivity standpoint, people skills are the most important element of a mission-based team leads job whereas, for a program-based team, the leaders primary duties are to coordinate lines of communications and plan tasks in preparation for a successful product transition to advanced development. In either case, the roles and requirements of a research team lead are more extensive than understanding the science. They call for understanding and respecting the needs and talents of people, and the operation of the organization at all levels.
