Abstract:

This proposal is for development and fielding of a new acoustic communications and navigation system for use on autonomous platforms gliders and profiling floats under the Arctic ice. The system consists of ice-tethered sources making GPS-synchronized transmissions and receivers based on the WHOI Micro-Modem that are installed on the remote platforms. Time of arrival is used in conjunction with information about the source location contained within the message to compute the actual geographic location. Command information is also sent, allowing remote control of the submerged systems which are otherwise out of contact below the ice.
