Abstract:
There exists a need to develop low-cost passive samplers to monitor both metals and organics contamination in sediment in an integrative and quantitative manner. This was accomplished by the development of passive samplers prepared using a swellable organosilica material, Osorb media, to capture both dissolved organics, e.g., munitions, and metals, e.g.,PbII, CuII, and ZnII, from water and sediment. It was also demonstrated that the Osorb media can be loaded with triolein to mimic the tissues of benthic organisms without significant loss in capacity for the contaminants.
