Abstract:

As a direct result of the support of this award, we constructed a MOT Magneto Optical Trap of rubidium atoms, demonstrated excitation of the laser-cooled atoms with single pulses from a mode-locked laser, constructed a buffer-gas beam source, developed a novel long-pulse auto correlator for measuring and characterizing pulse chirp for adiabatic rapid passage, and demonstrated laser cooling and trapping of atoms on a two-photon transition driven by an optical frequency comb.
