During and after World War II, the United States manipulated the economic weakness of their ally, the United Kingdom, to increase US power and further national interests. Currently, as the worlds largest debtor, the United States, is positioning itself in a similarly precarious position. This paper seeks to explore how the United States manipulated economic power to erode the global position of the United Kingdom through the Destroyers for Bases agreement, Atlantic Charter, Anglo-American loan, Bretton Woods agreement, and in the Suez Crisis. In todays environment the cumulative debt in the United States and other western economies provides similar leverage for nations financing government spending.
