Abstract:
Promoting resiliency, or hardiness, must occur early on in a members career to provide a foundation of skills that can be built upon across the life-span. This must occur at the individual level with reinforcement through a unit and leadership culture that equates the importance of mental preparedness with physical preparedness. Embedding hardiness training within basic training, technical school, and professional military education would enable members to develop a set of coping skills that would not only enhance mental preparedness, but also optimize military performance.
