During his storied military career, General John J. Pershing partnered with a wide variety of characters. From the American West to the fields of Europe, Pershing developed his own sense of cultural awareness. This cultural intelligence would directly impact his ability to establish trust with his partners, be they Sioux army scouts, Cuban insurrectos, Moro tribesman or European army commanders. Current U.S. strategy emphasizes the need for military partnerships. Briefly defining partnerships and then reviewing Pershings personal experiences in turn will highlight the importance of cultural intelligence for Pershings partnering and provide insight for Americas military as it seeks to share the burdens of future conflict.
