The overall purpose of this research effort is to determine the role iron acquisition and biofilm functionsexpressed by Gram-negative pathogens play in the pathogenesis of severe infections in the Wounded Warriorbecause of polytrauma and blast injuries. The information collected with these studies will be used to explorethe efficacy of different chemical and biological agents to block these potential virulence functions usingappropriate experimental infection models. These studies have the potential of providing not only new basicinformation on the pathobiology of bacteria that cause serious infections, but also facilitating the developmentof new and more effective therapeutics to treat severe Gram-negative infections in wounded military personnel.
