Abstract:

Contemporary reactions to Russian aggression advance the notion that the U.S. and its western allies should internationally and economically isolate Russia while increasing the alliances hard power projection to contain and deter further aggression. This advancement is a polarizing pendulum swing in response to the perceived failure of the 2009 Reset of relations between U.S. and Russia. With an understanding of Russian strategic culture and national interests in mind, this thesis offers that actually a blended solution of both deterrent strength and engagement would achieve better results in line with U.S. national interests.
