Abstract:

IDA was asked by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency DARPA to make an assessment of the issue of global food security. There are many studies in the literature and the popular press that indicate that the world will not be able to support the expanding population of the world into the mid-21st century. It has been purported that emerging economies such as China, India, and Brazil will eventually place a large burden on the global food supply with their increasing populations and their eventual demand for a more Western-style diet that consists of greater proportions of meats, oils, and fresh vegetables.
