In 1994, the FA-18 program was selected to be a prototype for implementing Integrated Product Teams IPTs. This case study traces the evolution of the FA-18 program from functional stovepipes to a product orientation in which all functional areas work together concurrently as a team. The case study was sponsored by the Office of the Under Secretary of Defense Acquisition and Technology to provide a real-life example of IPTs and Integrated Product and Process Development IPPD from an acquisition perspective. The transition to IPTs began with a high-level vision and required a great deal of thought, effort, and persistence to turn that vision into a concrete reality. Material for this case study came from a series of interviews that took place at the FA-18 Program Office in Patuxent River, Maryland, during the Fall of 1997.
