Abstract:

Outcomes of the current U.S. maternity care system suggest misalignment of important system drivers with fundamental goals for care introducing barriers to evidence uptake in policy and practice. The Transforming Maternity Care TMC Project used an open, discursive process of multi-stakeholder collaboration to develop system-based solutions to identify problems with the quality and value of maternity care in the United States. The TMC Project was grounded in change theory, systems theory, and organizational development. Qualitative examination of the Project process and outcomes using grounded theory methods enabled emergence of a constructivist grounded theoretical model that fosters understanding of the studied experience situated within a scholarly conceptual framework.
