The goal of the project was to investigate the fundamental factors that control the elevated temperature mechanical and thermal properties of ultra-high temperature diboride ceramics that are relevant to future Air Force needs related to hypersonic aviation and scramjet propulsion. The three main areas of research were 1 structure-property relationships 2 thermal properties and 3 elevated temperature mechanical behavior of zirconium diboride and zirconium diboride-silicon carbide ceramics. Significant progress was made in each of the project areas.
