Abstract:

Since 2012 the Department of Defense DOD Hearing Conservation Working Group, the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Branch AFHSB formerly the AFHS Center AFHSC, the Army Public Health Center Prov APHC formerly the Army Institute of Public Health and the DOD Hearing Center of Excellence have collaborated to develop new standard DOD and individual Services Noise-Induced Hearing Injury NIHI surveillance quarterly data summaries, including data on frequency and rates of sensorineural hearing loss SNHL, significant threshold shift STS, noise-induced hearing loss NIHL, and tinnitus. The objectives of these NIHI data summaries are To present and summarize available medical surveillance data for use in NIHI prevention program and policy planning, including -defining the relative impact of NIHI among Active Duty personnel and at individual installations, providing multi-year injury rates and trends, and identifying demographics most closely associated with NIHI incidence. Also, to monitor progress-based metrics for reducing NIHI morbidity burden over time.
