Abstract:

Injuries pose a major public health problem for the U.S. Army, impacting almost 300,000 active duty Army Soldiers annually leading to over 1.4 million medical encounters. Since 2008, MEDCOM has had the highest injury rates among all Major Army Commands MACOMs. Purpose To 1 define the relative impact of injury compared to other medical conditions among active duty MEDCOM personnel and 2 describe details of injuries among MEDCOM personnel, including leading injury causes, injury types, and affected body regions. Methods Injury data fatalities, hospitalizations, and outpatient visits were obtained from the Armed Forces Health Surveillance Center in May 2015 for active duty Army personnel assigned to MEDCOM. Trends in injury rates by MACOM, 2005-2014, and descriptive statistics on 2014 MEDCOM injury causes, types, and body regions affected were calculated for hospitalizations and outpatient visits.
