Rolling procedures for equal channel angular extrusion ECAEprocessed AZ31 magnesium plates have been developed. Using a temperature of 300 C and a 10 reduction per rolling pass, the initially 9-mm-thick plates were successfully reduced into 1.5-mm-thick sheets. Two sets of plates, each with a different texture type, were evaluated. Microscopic examination of the rolled sheet material shows a highly heterogeneous substructure, consisting of 2 types of precipitate colonies dispersed in a refined grain size 10 m magnesium alloy matrix. Furthermore, the as-rolled microstructure is banded, containing alternating layers of coarser and finer grains. These regions are separated by a network of shear bands. Mechanical testing results show a relatively high strength and high ductility. However, the ability to fabricate sheet material from the ECAE plates strongly depends on their initial texture. Moreover, texture A produces greater asymmetry in the measured ductility along the longitudinal and transverse directions, respectively, than does texture C.
