Abstract:
This report presents the design, computational electromagnetic modeling, and measurement of a cavity-backed circular planar monopole antenna intended to serve as an alternative to an already existing Vivaldi antenna in a multichannel radar system. This report briefly summarizes the standard performance and design methods of both a generic circular planar monopole and Vivaldi to give a background on both antennas. The circular planar monopole presented is based on previous work, and is modified through 2 revisions to improve forward radiation, isolation, and ruggedness. The final design is compared to the performance of a simulated Vivaldi example to highlight comparable gain performance in a more compact and lower profile package and is further contrasted with the current Vivaldi. The final design has more forward gain and a more tolerable voltage standing wave ratio with a lower profile than the current Vivaldi antenna.
