Abstract:

The PET biomarker, F-FDDNP 2-1-6-2-F-18fluoroethylmethylamino-2-naphthylethylidene malononitrile FDDNP has shown sensitivity for in vivo detection of tau in addition to -sheet-containing brain amyloid neuroaggregates. Tau protein in a characteristic distribution is felt to be the cardinal pathologic feature of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy. This project will examine whether FDDNP PET imaging correlates with, andor can predict, decline in cognitive function in those exposed to cumulative head trauma. Enrollment of subjects began in March, 2015, with 19 FDDNP PET images completed. Image quality has been excellent and quantitative analyses will begin when 50 of the subjects are completed. Enrollment has been delayed due to several unavoidable factors, but it is expected that all baseline imaging will be completed by summer, 2016.
