Abstract:
Means of utilizing multiplexing technology in the interior communication systems of large military aircraft were studied. Candidate system approaches included Time division multiplexing TDM of digitized audio samples onto a common distribution cable to subscriber stations frequency division multiplexing FDM of audio onto a common distribution cable in a phase synchronous single sideband suppressed carrier SSBSC system and digital TDM control of a centralized switching matrix which performs all audio switching and mixing as in the ANAIC-27 airborne interphone system. These approaches were compared using the audio distribution system of the Airborne Warning and Control System AWACS as a model requirements set. The ANAIC-27 approach was found to be clearly superior because of its low complexity and its ability to provide secure communications. A system for the AWACS requirements utilizing this approach was configured in detail and is described. Author
