Abstract:
The structural development of advanced Composite Fittings for highly loaded wing and empennage to fuselage attachment is described. The program investigates general fitting elements such as lugs -both laminated and wrapped and laminated corners, plus the most generally utilized discrete fitting types. Fittings such as male lugs, female lugs, bathtubs, daggers, and tees are developed in composite materials, fabricated and tested. The full spectrum of composite materials is employed including graphite epoxy, boronepoxy, boronaluminum, and glassepoxy. As a final demonstration of the techniques developed, two full scale F-15 main spar lugs are designed, fabricated and tested. These 170,000 pound capacity fittings employ a unique wrapped boronepoxy lug on a titanium carrier which saves over 20 of the weight of its titanium counterpart. Author, modified-PL
