Abstract:

The examination of material properties associated with regions of high responsivity and detectivity has provided insight to improvements in the ITO type PbSe infrared detectors. Methods of contouring the PbSe film were examined to locate the material with highest responsivity and detectivity. From detector performance measurements at 173 and 145 degrees K, and under cold background conditions, properties of the film were interpreted with the aid of additional information on the mobility, response time, and temperature dependence of the performance parameters of the film. Considerable variation of detector performance is found to result from the process steps associated with the deposition of the PbSe film as well as the sensitization step. Variation in film thickness across the substrate of an array results in corresponding variations of responsivity of the detector. In addition to this, the sensitization process results in variations of resistance and noise behavior which are recognized as deviations from ideal noise behavior. Both a reduction in responsivity and a variety of detector performance dependence on background radiation result from the deviation from ideal noise behavior. Author
