Abstract:
A study of the electrooptic properties of liquid crystals and their potential in several Navy device applications is described. Experimental work in the evaporation and sputtering of photoconductive films for the photoactivation of a liquid crystal device is also described. A refreshable multichannel liquid crystal memory for an optical correlator is selected for a feasibility study. Evaluated in the Incoherent Optical Sonar Correlator System under development AT NELC, a photoactivated storage cell is found to be nearly equivalent in performance to the high-contrast photographic film presently used in the system.
