Abstract:
This report compiles and discusses spectroscopic data to be used as inputs to a computer analysis of laser performance potentials of various laser-ion host-lattice combinations. We gathered these numbers from the scientific literature and from our own experiments. A thorough investigation of the cross-sections and oscillator strengths of NdYAG was performed after it was established that previous work done on this material was not accurate due to various errors introduced in the course of data interpretation. Since the chief difficulties were in the determination of the Nd concentration and the lack of a correction for self-absorption effects, these features were carefully studied. Spectroscopic data pertaining to the laser operation of Nd in YAlO3 and GGG have also been taken and analyzed. In addition, the polarization properties of NDYAlO3 were investigated. A survey of the theory and experimental results of nonradiative transition rates in crystals indicated that the amount of available data is not large. While monoenergetic-phonon theories can account for some of the experimental data, there is need for considerable expansion of both the experimental and theoretical research programs in this area.
