Abstract:

A Laser Transceiver Electronics system was developed for use in an Air Force Program 405B brassboard 1 Gbs laser communication system using quadraphase shift key modulation on a single-frequency laser. This system contains a data source system, BER measurement system, 1 Gbs QPSK modulator plus 100 kbsPSK modulator, 1 Gbs QPSK demodulator plus 100 kbsPSK downconverter, and two each 500 Mbs bit synchronizer-signal conditioners BSSC . Synchronous combined modem-BSSC performance at 1 Gbs is within 1.3 dB of the nonbandlimited PSK theoretical curve for BERs to 10 to the minus 6th power over an automatic gain control range of 20 dB and with the 100 kbs telemetry present. Nonsynchronous performance for close bit rates is within 0.2 dB of the synchronous curve. EbNo on the downconverted telemetry IF output ranges from 20 to 30 dB for a wideband EbNo range of 2 to 14 dB at the demodulator imput. The conclusion is that 1 Gbs QPSK signal processing has advanced to a state where operational hardware is practical.
