An experiment to test a design concept for making the extractor rim of a plastic ammunition cartridge case consumable by embedding a heat source in the base is described. In the test an embedded pyrotechnic causes the rim of a polysulfone model of a 5 inch54 cartridge case to be almost completely consumed. The resistance of the rest of the poly-sulfone model to the thermal loading it experiences suggests that polysulfone could probably be used to make nonconsumable cartridge cases which would have to be extracted after the round was fired to replace conventional brass cases.
