Abstract:

The Air-to-Air Gunfire-Control System Evaluator study involves the conceptual development of an airborne simulator of gunfire. It has been synthesized to evaluate advanced gunsights and to train and evaluate fighter pilots. The evaluator models the simulated bullet stream, computes the bullet dispersion pattern, and calculates the expected number of hits from a simulated firing pass at an actual target aircraft. Results from the firing pass are displayed instantaneously to the pilot as hits occur. The evaluator study involved the analytical development of the simulated firing pass, simulation of it, an accuracy analysis of the expected number of hits, and methods of mechanizing the evaluator in an aircraft. Simulation test results show the evaluator hit computation algorithm, generated during the study, to be very accurate. The study showed the evaluator concept to be entirely feasible as an advanced gunsight evaluator and as a training aid. The recommended advanced gunsight evaluator version of the system is one that employs the latest development in TV-compatible FLIR target seekers mounted on a stabilized platform. The FLIR will be interfaced with the latest developments in centroid trackers. This concept of the evaluator will use a continuous wave CW DME Distance Measuring Equipment to supply range to the target.
