Abstract:

Canard planform effects on the subsonic longitudinal aerodynamics of a 25 deg and a 50 deg swept-wing research aircraft were determined experimentally for close-coupled canard-wing configurations. Canard surfaces having leading-edge sweepback angles of 25 deg, 45 deg, and 60 deg were located at various horizontal and vertical positions for positive and negative deflection angles. Both force measurements and flow visualization tufts were obtained. Within the range of parameters examined, increasing canard leading-edge sweep increases both the maximum lift coefficient and the stall angle of attack. On the other hand, increasing canard leading-edge sweep decreases the maximum lift-to-drag ratio. Appropriate placement of the canards on the basic wingbody configuration delays flow separation over the inboard region of the wing. Author
