Abstract:

This report presents the results of a study to provide a basis for more effectively using Large Scale Integration LSI techniques in advanced avionics systems. Data was gathered from Air Force System Project Offices, avionics prime contractors, and systemsubsystem suppliers concerning the avionics systems considerations. In a like manner, data was gathered from Semiconductor vendors concerning the Integrated Circuit Technology and fabrication considerations. These data were utilized to construct examples from which quantitative comparisons of different implementation methods were made. The results show that Custom LSI can provide significant advantages in size, weight, and reliability over standard SSIMSI implementation. The results also show that the use of Custom LSI can be cost effective for the production of as few as 30-40 systems. Of the different methods of achieving Custom LSI, the use of a library of standard cells and computer aided layout to realize monolithic MOS LSICs was rated best. Where the speed requirements cannot be met with MOS, hybrid packaging of standard bipolar chips is recommended. Author
