Abstract:

Increasing the viscosity of polymer in a methyl cyanopropyl polysiloxane-based channel sealant increased the side extrusion through metal mismatches. Addition of styrene-divinyl benzene spheres to the sealant produced gelling unless the epoxy resin used for viscosity control was prereacted with the siloxane polymer. The size distribution of spheres was found to be critical to avoid channel plugging while maintaining gap sealing. Formulations were found which did not extrude through 15-mil gaps. These formulations passed cycling requirements at a temperature of 250 F, but developed random leaks on bare aluminum during the cold portion of the 350 F sealing efficiency tests. Author-PL
