Abstract:

This report details the results of an investigation into the characteristics of a communications processor and a programming language suitable for such a machine. In both circuit and message switching equipments there has been a definite trend toward the use of computers as the central control element. This has provided a substantial increase in the flexibility of newer equipments. These applications have led to the development of specific computer architectures and unique instruction complements to facilitate the performance of the communications processing job. The study reported herein first considers the communication characteristics of a sampling of existing and defined future equipments to be able to reflect these characteristics on the capabilities of a communications processor common to all these equipments is then evolved. Secondly, this report examines the need for a program language which is suited for a communications environment. These needs are described in detail, and major, existing languages are examined with respect to these attributes. From this a Communications Oriented Language COL is proposed. Author
