Abstract:

This report describes the preliminary design and analysis for an advanced metallic air vehicle structure. The wind carrythrough structure of the B-1 airplane designed by North American Rockwell was used as the baseline vehicle. Complete information concerning the baseline WCTS including lines, detail drawings, static loads, fatigue spectrum, fracture criteria and materials information was provided. Two different designs were documented for comparison with the baseline WCTS. Epoxy- novolac adhesives were used for the adhesive bonding of the metals. A subsequent program is proposed to demonstrate the capability of the selected design to have both improved structural efficiency and improved structural integrity and reliability.
