Abstract:
This report compares the relative performance of the revised designs for advanced landing craft as they existed at the end of the preliminary design phase of the Amphibious Assault Landing Craft program S14-17X. The results were obtained largely through the use of detailed simulations of amphibious assault operations using various combinations of ships, helicopters, landing craft and operating modes in the mid-range time period to 1985. The report points out the effects of advanced characteristics on the amphibious assault process, and compares several types of advanced craft with each other and with conventional craft. Conclusions are drawn and recommendations are made as to further development of advanced landing craft. In particular, the JEFF craft are recommended for further development.
