Techniques resulting in high overall efficiency over extended bandwidths have been considered in this study effort. Some of the techniques have been pursued during previous efficiency studies in which high efficiencies have beed demonstrated on low duty pulsed traveling-wave tubes. The present study is complicated by both the high average power requirement and the dual mode capability to be afforded by the resulting experimental tube. During the second phase of the study effort attention was directed to the design of the dual mode electron gun. An experimental gun was designed and experimentally evaluated. In addition, satisfactory match design have been demonstrated for both the input and output transducers. Considerable effort has also been expended on constructional and assembly techniques. A multistage depressed collector has been designed to recover a portion of the spent electron beam energy and thus increase the overall conversion efficiency. An experimental dual mode velocity taper tube will be constructed and experimentally evaluated during the next contract period. Author
