Abstract:

This report describes the development of a novel type of device for measuring and recording the magnitude and direction of water current instantaneously and countinuously. It is designed to be installed on the ocean bottom or on a submerged stable platform. The first unit fabricated was installed 14 January 1963 on the Naval Underwater Systems Center NUSC range in Narragansett Bay at a depth of 50 feet, 750 yards north of the Gould Island firing pier and 185 yards east of the range centerline. This device provided continuous current data until 26 May 1963, when a material failure rendered it inoperable. A statistical analysis of data obtained from this first installation is included. A redesigned water current meter, which makes material failure extremely unlikely, was constructed and was installed 3 November 1964 at the same position on the NUSC range. It appears that this device can provide instantaneous and continuous measurement of current data for several years with only minor periodic inspection of the installation necessary. Author
