Abstract:

The problem considered is a two-dimensional horizontal plane model of a constant velocity aircraft in an encounter with a proportional navigation pursuer. The turning rate of both the target and pursuer is constrained, and a time constant is included in the control system of each vehicle. In addition, the effect of drag on the pursuers velocity is considered. The optimal aircraft control for this model is determined, and the effects of this optimal control are then compared with the results of other investigations to determine the effects of drag on the optimal miss distance.
