Abstract:

The NAVAIRDEVCEN study shows that a conservative fatigue analysis method indicates the possibility of failure at a low number of limit load catapult launch cycles. A review of the carrier catapult tow bar load spectrum for cumulative fatigue damage analysis indicates that a more severe design spectrum is needed. The NAVAIREWORKFACs have observed recurring corrosion of the strut components and have recommended more effective lubricationprotection modifications. Inspection procedures at present may be unreliable. NAVAIRDEVCEN recommends a change of NLG material and a comprehensive testing program for fatigue critical components of the NLG. Author
