Abstract:

During the design of the supersonic transport, efforts to extend the existing method of analysis of intermediate tension field beams led to two separate methods of analysis 1 a semiempirical method based on modifications to NACA TN2661 and 2 an analytical approach based on the minimum total potential energy theorem. Test data from 18 aluminum and titanium test beams are correlated with predictions using the semiempirical method. The method is demonstrated to be applicable to the design of aluminum and titanium beams. The analytical approach is successfully applied to the problem of a square single-panel beam. These results are compared to those of NACA TN962. Application of the method to multipanel beams is not yet possible due to computer program convergence problems. Author
