Abstract:

This document summarizes results of development and production efforts on the fusion welding of titanium alloys, primarily Ti-6Al-4V, for the SST prototype. It covers discussions on process development and controls, mechanical properties of joints, joint design, environmental effects on weldments, and hardware producibility on a scale-up basis using the various fusion welding processes. Development efforts involving the following welding processes are described gas tugsten arc welding GTAW, gas metal arch welding GMAW, plasma arc welding PAW, in place tube welding, and electron beam welding EBW. In addition, filler wire evaluation is included. Fatigue data, effects of defects and weld repair, and residual stress and stress relief investigations are presented. Typical SST prototype welding applications are illustrated. Process and material specifications resulting from this effort are included. Recommendations for future work are described. Author
