Abstract:

This document summarizes results of a development and production scale-up program for the aluminum-brazed titanium honeycomb system. The system was developed to meet the specific structural requirements of the SST prototype, i.e., ability to withstand 450 F maximum service temperature and to carry end loads up to 15,000 lbin. The system is considered a major materials breakthrough for structural honeycomb applications. The testing results including the corrosion resistance, creep and metallurgical stability, mechanical properties, and fracture toughness testing are summarized. The entire program is reviewed including the early braze alloy and process development efforts. Complete design and process documentation, i.e., design criteria, process and materials specifications, and quality acceptance criteria, was established and the key documents are included. The NDT methods and procedures developed for the system are also included. The successful demonstration of scale-up and reproducibility of prototype hardware is reviewed. Structural panels to 3 by 22 ft were fabricated and evaluated. Recommendations for future programs to extend the system to broader ranges of application are presented. The process has potential for applications such as 800 F operation, wedge panel designs, 3-in. panel thicknesses, and core densities down to 2 lbcu ft.
