A technique is developed for analytically evaluating pavement systems using the finite element method. This technique covers a broad range of real world problems including arbitrary gear loading, and variation in geometry and properties of pavement and soil. To facilitate use of the finite element code, pre- and post-processing codes have been written which provide automatic element generation and computer drawn plots of results. Finally, a discussion is presented of extension of the present linear elastic technique to nonlinear material characterization and dynamic load response. Author
